Maurice Mays:
"I also want people to know who Maurice Mays was, a man who was very intelligent. He was a poet, he owned a cafe and was a deputy sheriff in 1917" - Jeanine F. Hunter
"I am innocent and I hope the politicians are satisfied" were the last words of Maurice Mays before he was executed by electric chair in 1922. He was the actual son of a rich white man (the governor), however grew up as the child of a freed Black man. Due to his high upbringings (compared to the rest of the blacks), Mays held ties with both White and Black women. This led him to be highly disliked by many in the society including a wide variety of officers, one of which condemned him to his death.
